The Human Voice: A powerful digital biomarker for health
Biomarkers (short for biological markers) have been fundamental in transforming clinical practice in several therapy areas by enabling precision medicine and individualized patient-centric care. Biomarkers are biological measures of a biological state, that represent a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacological responses to a therapeutic intervention.
Biomarkers have been used as measures to perform a clinical assessment and are applied in patient care to monitor and predict health states of individuals or across populations with the goal to plan appropriate therapeutic interventions.
With the advancements in technology and the relentless rise of digital health, modern medicine is currently witnessing the emergence of a new class of biomarkers: Novel, objective and quantifiable, patient-generated measures of the physiology and pathophysiology of the human body that are captured non-invasively via connected digital devices, so-called digital biomarkers.
Investigations around the world have shown that diseases significantly affect organs such as the heart, lungs, brain, muscles, or vocal folds, which can then alter an individual’s voice. A prominent number of organs are involved in its development and research has been able to show within the past few years that diseases significantly change the physiology of the vocal systems and are barely audible to the human ear.
